Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region and is located on the mouth of the Grey River. Maori had lived in Greymouth well before European settlement, and called the area Mawhera for “wide spread river mouth”. The Greymouth urban area has an estimated population of just under 10,000 people.
The town has a long history of gold mining, which visitors can learn about at the local museum in nearby Shantytown. Around the town area, you will find a lot of pounamu (greenstone) galleries, for which the town is famous for.
