About National Park

National Park is a small town on the border of Tongariro National Park - the first national park in New Zealand, established in 1887. The village is situated at the base of Mt Ruapehu, and offers great views of all 3 mountains, Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu.

Mt Ruapehu holds two of the country’s largest ski fields, whilst Mt Ngauruhoe is New Zealand’s newest and most active volcano. Mt Ngauruhoe was also used as Mt Doom in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

One of the main attractions in National Park is the world-famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The Crossing is a day hike in which you can see cold mountain springs, active volcanic craters and thermal steam vents. The track takes between 6 to 8 hours to hike 19.4 km depending on personal hiking speed and rest stops taken. Shorter hiking options are also available.
