About Waihi

Waihi is a small town located in the Hauraki District, sitting at the foot of the Coromandel Peninsula and the top of the Bay of Plenty. Gold was discovered in Waihi in 1878 and the township gradually grew around the Martha Mine, an extremely prosperous gold and silver mine which is still in operation today. The road to Waihi passes through the impressive Karangahake Gorge, a steep canyon with the Ohinemuri River winding through it.

Nearby Waihi Beach is a popular resort town which holidaying Kiwis flock to in the summer months. Waihi Beach is a nine-kilometre long white sand beach with safe surf conditions.
