About Thames

Sitting at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, Thames (pronounced 'Tems') started off as a mining town thanks to the Coromandel gold rush in the 1860s. Thames is the largest town in the Coromandel and a great starting point for a trip around the peninsula.

If you're interested in history, visit the Goldmine Experience and learn about the town's past and even try panning for gold yourself. The nearby Kauaeranga Valley offers several different walking and hiking options including overnight tramps. The beautiful pohutukawa-lined beaches around the Thames coast are great for families and are popular for boating and fishing.
