About Thames

The historical town of Thames is located at the southwestern end of the Coromandel Peninsula. In the late 1800’s Thames was a vibrant gold-mining city and held the largest population in New Zealand. Over the short lifespan of the Thames Mines, official figures have valued the production at $845 million. Today Thames is much smaller and has returned to its humble beginnings.

A central location on the Coromandel Peninsula, Thames has many natural attractions including hiking in the Kauaeranga Valley and biking the Hauraki Rail Trail. For an action-packed day try the Sleeping God trip that Canyonz offer, it’s an exhilarating vertical descent requiring you to abseil, zip-line, water slide and jump into deep pools of water!

Famous for its secluded golden and white sandy beaches, the Coromandel region boasts some of New Zealand’s most spectacular coastal scenery. With calmer beaches on the west coast and wilder east coast surf beaches, you can take your pick of New Zealand's finest beaches. A two hour lesson with the crew at Coromandel surf school and you’ll be a pro surfing the waves at the popular beaches of Whangapoua, Matarangi and Kuaotunu. All of these beaches can be reached by catching an InterCity bus from Thames.

If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, we suggest you head north and capture the beauty of the remote coastlines on a guided tour. Or pay a visit to one of the lovely gardens such as the Driving Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. Here you can also enjoy a one hour train ride through native forestland viewing interesting pottery works by founder, Barry Brickell.

Pohutakawa trees, also known as New Zealand’s Christmas tree, adorn the west coastline and look absolutely glorious in the summer months when their bright red blooms decorate the tree. The lush forest that surrounds the coast provides excellent walking opportunities, from short treks to multi-day adventures.
