About Wellington

The capital city of New Zealand, Wellington, is located at the bottom of the North Island - but it's so much more than just a centre for government. With a vibrant food and entertainment scene and a stunningly scenic waterfront area, Wellington is the perfect place for a city break. Said to have more cafes, bars and restaurants per head than New York, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to dining and entertainment options.

Kincknamed 'Windy Welly', Wellington experiences strong southerly winds with the highest gust of wind ever recorded in Wellington reaching 248km an hour! It's no wonder there are several wind turbines in Wellington which generate enough electricity to power over 100,00 households a year.

Getting around Wellington by foot is easy and it does help if you're reasonably fit as many of the streets have a steep incline. Strolling through the city centre and along the waterfront is thoroughly enjoyable with many visually pleasing and interesting artworks to admire through town and along the waterfont.

Wellingtonians pride themselves on the city's array of cultural options including galleries, museums and theatres. Te Papa and the Wellington Museum are two places you have to visit on a trip to Wellington.  There's always something interesting happening at the Wellington Art Gallery and the TSB Arena, where many international celebrities perform live.

Other fun things to do while in Wellington include a Cable Car ride, visiting Zealandia, and taking a tour of the Weta Workshop to see how movies such as Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Avatar came to life.

Sports fans flock to Wellington's main stadium, known as the 'Cake Tin' for events like the annual New Zealand Sevens tournament; while across town the Basin Reserve hosts cricket matches in a very traditional style.
