About Thames

The town of Thames (pronounced 'Tems') began its life as a mining town during the Coromandel gold rush of the 1860s. Today Thames is the largest town in the Coromandel and a great starting point for a trip around the peninsula, having plenty of shops, supermarkets and other useful facilities.

Things to do in Thames include the Goldmine Experience, where you can learn about the history of Thames and have a go at panning for gold. There are good walking and hiking tracks in the nearby Kauaeranga Valley, or if you'd prefer to relax on a beach, the Thames coast is full of beautiful family-friendly beaches where you can swim, boat and fish to your heart's content.
