About Whitianga

Whitianga is the second largest town on the Coromandel Peninsula and is a popular resort destination, especially in the summer months. It sits in Mercury Bay, an area named by Captain Cook who observed the transit of Mercury there in 1769.

Whitianga is popular with families and independent travellers for its beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle. Things to do in Whitianga include swimming, boating, sailing, fishing and other water sports.

As Whitianga is close to the beautiful Cathedral Cove, a beach reserve made famous in the second Chronicles of Narnia movie, kayaking out to Cathedral Cove is a very popular activity.

Take the ferry from Whitianga to the Ferry Landing across the harbour to explore Cooks Beach, Cathedral Cove and nearby Hahei.

If you'd prefer to keep your feet on dry land, why not take a walk in the native forest or take the historic inner city walk to learn more about the history and heritage of Whitianga.

Other relaxing things to do while in Whitianga include spending an afternoon at The Lost Springs day spa and thermal resort (under 14's are not permitted), or stroll through town and enjoy the boutique stores and the Bread and Butter Art Gallery

The kids will enjoy Whitianga just much as you, with endless summer evenings  spent at the beach and lots of different coastal locations to explore. There's also a bike park for burning some energy on land!

With the ease of travelling by bus to Whitianga, this resort destination is easily accessed for a quick weekend getaway.
