Travel Christchurch to Franz Josef via train and bus, taking the scenic TranzAlpine railway from Christchurch to Greymouth and connecting with InterCity’s West Coast bus service from Greymouth to Franz Josef.

TranzAlpine trains depart daily from Christchurch Railway Station. The total journey takes approximately nine hours including transfer time, arriving in the late afternoon in Franz Josef.

About Franz Josef

Franz Josef is a small town on the West Coast of the South Island, named for the nearby Franz Josef Glacier. The town is located within the Westland Tai Poutini National Park, surrounded by native rainforests.

Franz Josef Glacier is located about 5 kilometres from the town and is easily accessible on a guided ice walk or heli-hike.
