About Nelson

Established in 1841, Nelson is the second oldest developed city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. Named after the Admiral Horatio Nelson who defeated both the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, many of Nelson’s roads and public areas around the city are named after people and ships associated with that battle.

Nelson is famous for its art and crafts and was the original host city of the World of Wearable Art show. Many of the winning designs are now housed at the National World of Wearable Art and Classic Car Museum. There are many local art galleries, studios and gift shops to visit in Nelsons town centre. You'll also find many quality cafes and restaurants in the town centre serving delicious food and great local wine.

Situated in the secluded Tasman Bay, Nelson is one of New Zealand's sunniest cities. More sunshine hours means more time to explore the amazing natural landscape that Nelson offers. Close to three National Parks and located on the coast you can hike, mountain bike, kayak, paddle-board, horse trek or go swimming! These are just a few things you can do in the great outdoors in Nelson!

Thrill-seekers will enjoy throwing themselves out of an airplane and marveling at the stunning view of both the North and South Islands. Skydive Abel Tasman will take you high above earth where you'll skydive over vineyards, orchards, rivers, mountains, bush and sparkling water! They'll also record the whole thing for you to watch over and over again!
