Kawakawa is a small town in the Northland Region. Kawakawa was developed as a service town when coal was found in the area in 1861. Today the town's economy is based around farming. Kawakawa is known as a "Train Town", due to the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway which runs down the middle of its main street on the way to Opua. Kawakawa is also famous for its unique Hundertwasser toilet block, designed by Austrian artist Freidensreich Hundertwasser. Freidensreich was a resident of the town from 1975 until his death in 2000.
