About Bombay

Bombay lies on the southern boundary of Auckland and is also known as the 'Bombay Hills'. It was once called Willaimson's Clearing but was renamed after the ship Bombay which landed in Auckland in 1863 and brought settlers to the area. The ship Bombay got it's name from the Indian city of Bombay (now known as Mumbai).

There's an invisible line drawn south of the Bombay Hills which light-heartedly bears great significance to many New Zealanders. Some Aucklanders can view the area 'south of the Bombay Hills' as rural and unsophisticated, while in comparison the rest of the country can see Aucklanders as rude and snotty! At the end of the day it's a light-hearted phrase that's not at all true!

Bombay is home to New Zealand's largest olive estate, with an exquisite restaurant and award-winning olive oil and skin care products to purchase and take home. If you enjoy getting active, you can take a walk through some of the local farmland on the Mount William Walkway and enjoy stunning views from the summit in all directions. The view is worth the effort!

Other small towns that are worth a visit from Bombay include Pokeno, Pukekohe and Franklin where you'll find Spookers, the Pukekohe Park raceway and some of the country's best ice cream. Pokeno has a name for serving the biggest ice creams in New Zealand!
