Escape the big smoke and discover the mystical and magical Waitomo Caves on this great value return day trip from Auckland. Travelling south from Auckland this full day tour will take you on a journey through the lush and rolling countryside of the Waikato and King Country regions, and in to rural New Zealand.
Your driver will keep you informed with an entertaining commentary throughout the day with highlights of the region including Rangiriri, the location of one of the most significant battles in Maori Land Wars between local Maori and the British forces.
Once at the Waitomo Caves you will meet you meet your knowledgeable and local Maori guide who will give you a detailed commentary on the history of these wonderful caves, both geological and cultural.
Formed over 30 million years ago the caves are a natural wonder and are easily accessible by both young and old. As you follow your guide through the winding tunnels you will soon descend in to famous and awe-inspiring Cathedral - a cavern 18 metres high with wonderful natural acoustics and any singers within the group are more than welcome to test it out!
Once you've passed through the cathedral you'll board a boat that will glide silently over the dark waters into the Glowworm Grotto. With thousands of sparkling glowworms spread across the ceiling like a blanket of stars this is a peaceful and magical experience and one that is hard to beat.
At the end of the boat ride you will emerge in to a picturesque setting of native New Zealand bush before following a short trail back up to the Waitomo visitor complex to take the views and enjoy lunch (own expense).
Our tour concludes by returning to Auckland in the afternoon
