Experience the magic of this geothermal landscape on a self-guided walk along the trail at Craters of the Moon.
Take in the incredible sights of the bubbling mud pools and steaming craters as you walk through this other-worldly landscape.
Our well-maintained tracks are easy to follow and suitable for most people, the main walkway will take you on a 40-minute leisurely stroll through the valley and the optional 20-minute upper walkway will take you up the steps for fantastic views from the lookout.
Take your time, stop for photos and enjoy at your own pace.
Loop Track - Suitable for pushchairs. Wheelchairs are permitted but some areas of the path are more difficult to navigate than others. The path is mostly boardwalk but it is recommended that you have a person to assist in areas where there is a gravel path.
Upper Walkway - A moderate walk with multiple steps (totally worth it), not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

We loved this place..it is really affordable and amazing…do not miss it!
No that much to see.
Sorry you didn't enjoy your visit, I suggest you try us in the cooler months as there is a lot more steam.
Lovely 2.1 km walk to see wisps of steam rising from the earth. Disappointing that no bubbling pools were seen.

Extensive historic reserve that is well laid out
The fumeroles and craters are astonishing to see and the initial view at the kiosk does not do them justice. It is only upon walking through the grounds that it's apparent how geothermally active the area is, and there is lots of information about the history and impact of the geothermal power scheme. I spent 2 hours wandering the grounds, and there weren't that many other tourists so I could take my time comfortably. The raised walkways are well maintained and there are maps detailing the one-way direction that visitors should take. Although you can see similar fumeroles for free in Rotorua, the large craters and topography set Craters of the Moon apart. Note that there isn't a ticketing system for entry and the fee is treated more like a donation to the trust supporting this reserve.
