Established in 1841, Nelson is the second oldest developed city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. It is famous for its art and crafts and was the original host city of the World of Wearable Art show. Many of the winning designs are now housed close to the airport at the World of Wearable Art Museum.
Named after the Admiral Horatio Nelson who defeated both the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, many of Nelson’s roads and public areas around the city are named after people and ships associated with that battle. For ideas on what to do in Nelson check out nelsonnz.com
