About Nelson

Nelson is a city located on the eastern shores of Tasman Bay at the top of the South Island. Established in 1841, Nelson is the second-oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. Nelson was named in honour of the famous Admiral Horatio Nelson, who defeated both the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar. Many of the roads and public areas in the city are named after people and ships associated with the battle.

Thanks to its location by the sea, Nelson has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm summers. Visitors to Nelson, enjoy its laidback lifestyle, great beaches and creative community. While you're visiting Nelson, take a road trip to the nearby Te Waikoropupu Springs (Pupu Springs), which locals will proudly tell you have the clearest spring water in the world.
