About Tekapo

Lake Tekapo has formed approximately 250-300 million years ago when the Southern Alps and the area surrounding Lake Tekapo were part of the seafloor valley. Movement of the earth’s tectonic plates moved the once horizontal seabeds, which hardened to rock and pushed upwards to form the land that we see today.

Lake Tekapo is a source of hydroelectric power and is also popular as a tourist destination thanks to its picturesque shores with views of the Southern Alps.
