About Porirua

Porirua is a city within the Wellington Region and one of four cities that make up the Wellington Metropolitan area.  The city almost surrounds the Porirua Harbour.  The name “Porirua” is derived from the Maori language and is possibly a variant of “Pari-rua”, meaning two tides. This could possibly be a reference to the two arms of the Porirua Harbour.

Porirua has a unique claim to fame: it was the location of the first McDonald's restaurant in New Zealand, opened in 1976. It's also home to the Royal New Zealand Police College. Activities in Porirua include exploring the beaches and estuaries of the harbour and Pauatahanui Inlet, fishing and boating.
