About Whangarei

Whangarei is one of the first cities to be found in New Zealand. Whangarei is the regional capital of the Northland Region which is located at northernmost part of the North Island.

The Whangarei River travels through the city and empties into the Tasman Sea.

Legend has it that famed Polynesian navigator Kupe was the first person to discover Whangarei around 950 AD. Many suggest that roughly 50 years later the Ngapuhi tribe arrived on the west coast at Hokianga.

Notable attractions in Whangarei is the Kiwi North Museum. Kiwi North offers a museum and nocturnal kiwi house situated on 25 hectares of rolling, volcanic farmland, forest and bush. It's a great place for a family outing.
