About Waihi

Waihi is a small town located in the Hauraki District, at the foot of the Coromandel Peninsula. It is a town rich in history thanks to its gold mining past. The township gradually grew around the mining operations after gold was discovered in 1878.

The Martha Mine in Waihi grew to be one of the world’s most important gold and silver mines. The town of Waihi prospered due to the mine and by 1908, Waihi had become the fastest growing town in the wider Auckland Province. By the time Martha Mine closed in 1952, 160kg's of gold and over 1 million kg's of silver had been extracted from the mine. Visit the Waihi Gold Discovery Centre to learn more.

Visitors can explore the Martha Mine through the Pit Rim Walkway, hire a bike and make a day of it, there are plenty of scenic photo opportunities along the walkway.
