About Coromandel Town
The artisan, boutique and even perhaps bohemian town of Coromandel is named after the HMS Coromandel which sailed in to the harbour in 1820 in search of kauri spars (to be used as booms and masts). Just 75km east of Auckland city, the town is popular destination for both domestic and international visitors.
Home to a large collection of people passionate about arts and crafts, and independently-owned stores line the main street.

Being situated in the most northern town on the Coromandel Peninsula, you have to take advantage of your location and take the walk from Fletcher Bay to Stony Bay. This is a seven hour return walk or three - four hours one way. Passing the towering Mt Moehau, this walk takes you on a scenic journey through bush, farmland and pristine coastline. You can also stay the night at each end at one of the Department of Conservation’s (DOC) campsites.
Get out to sea and experience the best snapper hot spots on a Fishing Charter which steam out through the green lip mussel farms. Alternatively, for an intimate tour of the coast, head out on a sail boat and stop off at remote beaches which are only accessible by sea. You may even be lucky enough to see dolphins or orcas who visit the area often.
